TeamViewer is a great free program, whether you want to access your computer from afar or help out friends and relatives with their computer. But its default settings are remarkably insecure, instead favoring ease of use.
Back inthere was a rash of computers compromised through TeamViewer.
TeamViewer: security risk
And just now, in DecemberTeamViewer was forced to issue an emergency fix for a serious vulnerability in the program. And if you look at reports of past compromised machines, most victims were using an unsecured setup.
It favors ease of use over difficult-to-navigate security procedures. First, not every person needs to turn on every option we suggest. More on this in the next section. This is the single best way to avoid giving someone access to your machine.
With that in mind, shut down your TeamViewer application if it is currently running before proceeding onto the next steps. Enter your current password and replace it with a long, strong new password. Need to brush up on your strong password crafting skills? Enabling two-factor authentication on your TeamViewer account increases the security for the login credentials for your TeamViewer account.
It is critically important that you complete the entire tutorial here and as we demonstrate in the later sections either set a very strong password on your TeamViewer client or, better yet, lock your client to your account thus locking it to the two factor authentication. After you change your password you, as you did in the previous step, you will be automatically signed out of your TeamViewer account.
In short, two factor authentication adds another layer of identification to the login process instead of just your email and password, you need your email, password, and the unique code generated by the authentication app on your cellphone.
Open up your authenticator of choice, press the button to add a new service, and scan the QR code. Check the security code for TeamViewer within your authenticator app and enter it now. On the final step, print the emergency recovery code.
Store this code in a safe place.Maze runner masterlist
If you lose access to your authenticator, this is the only way you will be able to remove the two factor authentication. After printing the emergency code you can log out of the site.
You can download an updated version of the desktop application here. Reference your authenticator app and enter it now. While that secures your TeamViewer account in general, however, we still need to do a little work in the actual TeamViewer application itself.
We want to emphasize something we highlighted at the beginning of the tutorial: the settings and options you select are highly dependent on how you use TeamViewer. We would encourage you to secure the highest number of settings you can without reducing the utility of TeamViewer to the point that it is more of a hindrance than a help. There are two big settings you want to configure here.
If this is your personal computer that only you want access to, then you want to assign the computer to your account. Here you have some choices to make regarding password access and Windows access. Some people prefer to manually set a very strong password for their machine rather than rely on the randomly generated ones that TeamViewer uses by default. Again, you need to balance security concerns against ease of use.
If you enable this setting, TeamViewer will accept the login credentials that are valid on the computer as a valid access code for the application. Finally, you definitely want to set a whitelist for the computer.Skip to Main Content. Security risk assessment of TeamViewer application Abstract: Companies of almost any size use in their IT departments some sort of a remote access solution to help their employees. The most prominent of such solutions is a free VNC tool. Still, this tool has some serious security drawbacks, apart from being of less than satisfactory efficiency. This prompted a need for change and one solution that was evaluated was TeamViewer. Part of the evaluation process was security assessment in order to define minimal security settings for safe and secure use of the application.
This paper presents this security evaluations, tries to give a more general recipe for doing such reviews, and also discusses shortcoming of this review. One novelty of this security assessment is the use of CVSS scoring system to rate threats.
Article :. Need Help? The free-for-personal-use remote control software TeamViewer is currently under intense scrutiny. Large numbers of users are reporting unauthorized access to their computers, theft of login credentials, and in some cases, access to online financial systems and theft of funds.
It remains unclear exactly how these unauthorized intrusions are happening. TeamViewer officials are so far denying that the software has been hacked, insisting that the current surge in TeamViewer-based attacks are the result of password re-use, combined with the recent publication of several databases of stolen credentials.
If removal is not an option, as may the case for some support setups, then you should configure TeamViewer to not start with Windowsonly start it when asked to do so by support staff, and then close it when their work is complete.
Recommendation: disable the option that starts TeamViewer with Windows. You should also avoid using fixed, personal passwords, relying instead on the temporary passwords TeamViewer generates when it is started, or at least make sure that your personal passwords are strong and unique.
Change password strength of random passwords to 10 characters. If they are convinced that the problem is re-used passwords, why have they not forced a password change for all TeamViewer accounts? An account is not required to use TeamViewer, and exists only as a master address book for people who use TeamViewer to access many different computers.
If your TeamViewer account is compromised, an attacker will then have full access to all computers in your account. To their credit, Teamviewer is working to add new features to the software that should beef up its security. But the new features only affect TeamViewer accounts. Update Jun TeamViewer management continues to insist that the problem only affects TeamViewer accountsnot the TV desktop client. We recommend avoiding TV accounts if possible.
One post contains reports from users who have experienced TeamViewer-related intrusions. Another provides instructions for determining whether your computer has been accessed via unauthorized use of TeamViewer. Because if someone gets access to your TeamViewer account, they will also have full access to all of the computers you access through your account.

Based on that, earlier this morning, I asked Teamviewer if there was a way to limit the servers that Teamviewer would use; like only US servers. The TeamViewer network includes more than servers. Communication with the master cluster is done through DNS names; communication with the TeamViewer servers routing server and KeepAlive server is done directly via IP addresses.
The servers are spread across the globe and located at large data centers. Their IP addresses are not organized in common subnets or IP ranges.Pine oil mfg
Due to the fact that we are continuously up scaling our server network as the number of TeamViewer user grows, it is not possible to publish a list of current IP addresses or limit what servers you can connect to, because this list would be outdated very soon. In order for TeamViewer to work properly, access to all TeamViewer servers has to be possible.

Numerous user reports have indicated that unknown third parties are taking control of PCs and trying to steal money, through services like PayPal or eBay. Needless to say, this looks bad.
